The First Howl: Trails & Nog is everything you could hope for in a winter trail party...snowy trail loops, a book hunt, and a bit of eggnog to top off the festivities!    The Details TRAILS: Runners will have 4 hours to complete 3 separate loops on the Crevasse Moraine trail system. There will be a 5 mile, 3 mile, and 1 mile loop. At bib pick up, each runner will spin the wheel to determine the order of their loops. At the halfway point of each loop, runners must find a hidden book and tear out the page that matches their bib number (Barkley style) and return their page to the RD at the completion of that loop. The first M/F runners to complete all 3 loops and turn in their 3 pages will be the winner. Kick off the new year with a healthy start in historic Midway, KY! Join us for the 10th Annual Frozen Rails 5K & 10K in Midway, KY on Thursday, January 1, 2027 at 2pm. Kick off the new year with a healthy start at this run/walk event through the historic town of Midway. Our races will start/finish at Walter Bradley Park with our Race Headquarters at Northside Elementary School. Commemorative long-sleeved T-shirt, Chip Timing by RaceRise, Overall & Age Group awards, Berserker Brew Coffee & hot cocoa, DJ, free photos (Thanks Ruby Cline-Eaton!) and a "Best Finish Line Photo" Contest. We will also have an untimed 1-mile fun run/walk and kids' 1K. Partial proceeds will benefit the Midway Ministerial Association. The Midway Ministerial Association is a collaborative effort involving 7 Midway area churches (Midway Christian Church, Midway Baptist Church, Midway Presbyterian Church, St. Matthew’s AME Church, Midway United Methodist Church, Historic Second Christian Church, and Pilgrim Baptist Church) who provide support and funding for those in need in their community. It's never too early to start thinking ahead! We're starting 2027 the only way we know how, with a race! After you ring in the New Year, take a nap then come out, and join us and RUN (or walk) into the New Year! We're putting on the New Year's Day 5K and New Year's Day Half Marathon. We thought it would be appropriate to kiss 2026 goodbye, and are offering the New Year's Day 5K or New Year's Day Half Marathon for just $27! We'll have the same great course, music and an awesome Finisher Medal! We'll have shirts as an additional purchase for $25. We will be starting at 9:00 am at Walker Place Park in Bossier City and running alongside the river on the Arthur Ray Teague running/walking trail. If you're not ready to be out and about, join us for the virtual 5K, or virtual Half Marathon & we will ship you your swag (continental US only; lower 48 states)! Virtual participants will receive a Finisher Medal and shot at awards! Purchase your commemorative NYD 2026 shirt for just $25. We’ll also be presenting overall and age-group awards for each distance in the usual 5-year categories starting at 10 & under.

Hundred milers in a State Park or NWR have been done to death! This race is the "fly in the ointment" of Ultra running. You decide where you're going to run and when. This is a choose-your-own adventure race. Texas is gorgeous! Get out and explore it! This race allows you to travel the state and experience the beautiful trails and wild areas unique to Texas. You must run in 3 different regions of Texas. You have 48 hours to complete the challenge and must experience 5 trails. (Each trail represents a point on the Star. Ideally, you could connect the dots between trailheads to form a STAR.) I've identified 30 trails that are pre-approved to utilize during the race. I've also identified 7 unique regions within the state. Complete the challenge with a crew, friends, or solo. The S.O.L. is a do-it-yourself, self-guided, self or team supported 100 mile adventure. For the month of October, November and December in 2026; runners are invited to explore the beautiful trails of TEXAS. This choose-your-own-adventure race is a unique virtual event. Runners are asked to run 100 Miles on 5 TEXAS trails (S.O.T. because a star has 5 points) in 3 different regions of Texas, in 48 hours. Many folks can run a hundred in 24-32 hours, add in the logistics of travel, and nutrition and sleep and the time those things take...it gets more difficult. 100 miles in one location has been done to death! I, the RD, will provide a list of 25 approved trails to choose from. Athletes must submit a general plan and provide evidence of completion in the form of Strava, Coros, or Garmin data. *Runners would be wise to upload their data from watch to phone with wi-fi. I'd hate to see your event spoiled by a run getting wiped! Yes, you will get a BUCKLE and a t-shirt upon completion! (Mailed after you complete.) You may not complete the challenge prior to registering for the challenge. That's bogus! All of your submitted data must be recorded AFTER your registration date. If you're looking for a different type of ultra and would like to test yourself physically and mentally, this is the event for you! Rules: Runners must use the approved trails or submit a trail IF it's not on the list. Runners can start at any time of day but must complete the quest within 48 continuous hours. Runners may run in State Parks, WMA's, Corp. of Engineers Property, Parish Parks, National Forests, Rails to Trails trails, etc. as long as it is legal to do so. Private Property not allowed. Trails encouraged, gravel roads in National Forests will be considered as long as it's smaller percentage of your total run. Runners must pay park fees when necessary and follow the park rules and guidelines. Runners will travel between trails on their own dime. Ubers, shuttles, friends, spouses, etc. are allowed to transport the runner as well as your own vehicle of course. Runner may sleep between trails while in transit unless they are the driver. (duh.) Runners may sleep during their run or at a trailhead- follow best practices and the rules of the facility. Runners must run at least 1 trail in each of the THREE regions. I've identified 7 regions of Texas- 1. The Panhandle 2. Praries and Lakes 3. Piney Woods 4. Gulf Coast 5. South Texas 6. Hill Country 7. Big Bend YOU PICK 4 REGIONS! Runners accept the responsibility of researching the trails and ensure proper procedures are in place for hydration, nutrition, safety, extraction, lights, charging of equipment, etc. Part of the journey is doing the research and preparation. Runners may incorporate an existing race or Ultra into the mix but....said Ultra may not be longer than a 50k. (Runner pays for the Ultra) Runners may not exceed more than 50k on any single trail. (For example: No 60 mile trail and then 4 ten mile trails.) Runner must submit the Garmin, Strava, Coros, data to the RD upon completion. FB posts will also be good supporting evidence. Runners must be aware of hunting seasons and take reasonable precautions. Wearing Orange, taking precautions, running during non-hunting hours, being courteous to hunters. (Hunting on approved trails is technically not legal but........) A prediction run is entirely different from other races that you’ve run in the past. Rather than finishing first or running the fastest, the object of a prediction run is to finish as close to a certain time as possible. In the case of the Howard County Striders prediction runs, the goal is to finish as close to 11:00am as possible. One way the Striders prediction runs differ from many other runs is that you get to start whenever you want – whoever finishes closest to 11:00am wins. Oh, and one important thing, you CANNOT use any sort of timing device. Also, no baby strollers, iPods, headphones or animals. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Tripp Scholar Athlete Fund. The run is located at the Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center, 6031 Tamar Drive, Columbia, MD 21045

The Freezer 5 Mile Road Race Start your year the right way at one of Central Massachusetts' most enduring running traditions. The Freezer 5 Mile Road Race has welcomed runners to Sterling every New Year's Day for more than four decades, combining small-town charm, competitive racing, and a festive community atmosphere that keeps participants coming back year after year. The 2027 event marks the race's 46th anniversary. The race begins and ends at the Houghton School in Sterling and follows a scenic five-mile course through the town's rural roads. The route is primarily an out-and-back layout featuring gently rolling hills, open farmland, and views of the Sterling Airport. It is challenging enough to be interesting, yet approachable for runners of all abilities, making it an ideal way to kick off a new year of training and racing. What truly sets the Freezer 5 apart is the atmosphere. Participants are greeted with enthusiastic volunteers, a welcoming running community, post-race refreshments, hot chocolate, baked goods, giveaways, and a fitness expo featuring local organizations and businesses. Finisher medals, awards, team competitions, and a popular Kids Fun Run make the event a favorite for both serious runners and families. Hosted by the Central Mass Striders, the Freezer 5 has become a New England New Year's Day tradition.
