Big A 50K Trail Race

The Big A 50K Course The course is composed of three 10.35 mile loops starting at the summit of Mount Agamenticus (Big A) and climbing back up the Big A and going over Second Hill and Third Hill and back up the Big A. There are opportunities to cross the finish line at approximately 10 miles and 13 miles (or any multiple of them up to 31 miles/50K). The terrain is mostly single track with some dirt road and ATV-type trails. Footing is technical with plenty of rocks, roots, and elevation changes. Trail running shoes are recommended. The full 50K has approximately 5,787 feet of elevation gain. Due to upcoming floodgate maintenance by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the top of the dam and adjacent roads will be closed periodically throughout 2026. This popular Sprint Triathlon is celebrating our 6th year in 2026.  Enjoy a safe and scenic race while enjoying the beauty of historic Defuniak Springs located in the Florida panhandle.  Our racers enjoy a 600 meter wet suit friendly swim in one of the world's two circular lakes, a 16 mile bike ride through the rolling hills of the Eucheeanna Valley and finish with a 5k flat run passing by the historic homes of Defuniak Springs. Enjoy pulled pork sandwiches after the race and Celebration Party at the Last Stop Beer Vault complete with a free beer! Race Benefits local non-profits.  We donated almost $6,000 to local non-profits last year.

This free event is to celebrate the health and wellbeing of Shawnee Mission School District staff and their family members.  *This event is closed to the general public.  All SMSD staff members and their immediate families are invited.  Children 8 years of age and up are allowed to register for the 5K event.  Children under 8 are allowed to participate in the 5K, but must be with an adult at all times while on the race course.  Strollers are welcome. Start and finish line is in the Shawnee Mission South stadium with 5K route on the Indian Creek Trail.
