Join us for the 4th annual Purple Up! 5K run/walk on Friday April 17, 2026 at Lake Okatibbee!    April is Month of the Military Child, a time to honor the sacrifices and strength of all military children. The color purple symbolizes a combination of all branches of the military- Air Force blue, Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, and Coast Guard blue. Purple Up! Day is a special day set aside for all to wear purple to support and thank military children in the community and around the world. We invite everyone to wear purple to show your support!    Join WLHS National Honor Society and WLHS Stars & Stripes Club in a 5K run/walk at Lake Okatibbee. Contributions will benefit military families at school and in the community. Who We Are: Healthy Kids Running Series is a five (5) week running program in the spring and fall for kids Pre-K through 8th grade. Each HKRS Series takes place once a week and offers age-appropriate running events including the 50 & 75 yard dashes, the 1/4 mile, the 1/2 mile and the 1 mile run. Kids will earn points for each race they complete based on their finish. Pricing: The registration fee covers the entire five (5) weeks of the Series which includes race bibs for each week, a runner shirt, a finisher medal and any sponsor giveaways. Registration is non-refundable and non-transferable. Online Early Bird registration increases three weeks prior to the first race event.  Challenger: This Series offers a Challenger Division which is an adaptive 75 yard race for children with disabilities and/or special needs. The winners will be announced sometime in May/June. The scholarships will be paid directly to the student's school of choice upon proof of enrollment.Funding for these scholarships are raised from some of our Signature Races that we host annually.

Run 4 Their Lives is a Freedom 4/24 event that raises awareness and funds to prevent and end human trafficking both locally and globally. Run 4 Their Lives is Freedom 4/24’s 5k race tradition- created to bring awareness to the issue of human trafficking.  Since its inception, this race has developed to become a fundraiser and tool to implement prevention education.  We ask participants to partner with us in advocacy efforts by becoming fundraisers and using the race as a platform to share about the issue of human trafficking and the work of Freedom 4/24. Participants can run or walk this 5k (road) course that begins at East Fairmont High School (EFHS). You will start on the EFHS campus then go downhill on Airport Road. You will then turn right at Crosswinds and run out then back to Airport Road past the municipal airport. This is a family fun 5K (3.1 mile) walk/run and a one mile walk/run on a flat course with lots of entertainment for all to enjoy whether you are a serious runner or just want to have fun.   You choose if you want to walk/run the one mile or the 5K or if you want to take the Bahia Shrine Challenge and walk/run the one mile then the 5K.  Come join in on our event and enjoy entertainment from the Bahia Shrine parade units.  We have a fun 0.05k (164 feet) race that anyone can participate in.  The guest of honor is Sir Gus, Jr.*, our furry camel who will be awaiting your visits for photos, carrots and kisses.  The race goes on rain or shine, no back-up date.  In the event of a cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances, the race will switch to virtual, therefore you can still get your t-shirt and medal. Come join us for the fifth annual Try or Fail Spring Forward races! The 1-mile course will be run on the Workhouse Arts Center property starting and ending at the baseball fields going out and back. The 5K and the 10K races will both start from the Workhouse Arts Center as well, beginning on road and transitioning into the Cross Country Trail towards Giles Run before turning around to return to the Workhouse Arts Center.  The grounds of the previous Lorton Reformatory have been repurposed by the Cultural Arts Center and houses famous pieces of art by local and renown artists which truly is a site to see during the year. Hosted at Pleasants Landing Marina on Lake Anna, this race and venue are amazing. The swim takes place in the southeast portion of Lake Anna, about 1/4 mile from where the “hot side” of Lake Anna empties into the cold side, resulting in water temperatures that are 4-6 degree’s warmer than the rest of the lake at this time of year. So, you  can look forward to above average water temperatures in late April. The first open water race of the regular season starts at 9AM, so you can sleep in a little and make it a day at the lake with family and friends. Views of Lake Anna and the Blue Ridge Mountains give this race a magical feel, it’s a great place to race and spend the weekend outside. The Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon Series has earned its title as “America’s Toughest Road Marathon” by challenging runners with over 7,430 ft. in elevation change, more than any other road marathon in the U.S.  This race is the ONLY marathon that runs along the famously scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, and proceeds from this non-profit event benefit the parkway and a dozen local charities every year.  The full, half, relay and 10k all prove equally challenging yet rewarding on this mountainous course, and all runners are rewarded with a unique finishers’ medals, shirts and local craft beer at the festival-like finish in downtown Roanoke. Celebrating Children is a free community event in April highlighting Child Abuse Prevention Month and Month of the Military Child offered by the City of Virginia Beach, GrowSmart and the Department of Parks and Recreation. As part of this event, families and children are encouraged to participate in a Fun Run at Mt. Trashmore Park. After the Fun Run, family resource exhibitors will be on-site with children's activities and information to share, along with entertainment, mascots, and inflatables.
