Wings & Wander: Fall Migration Bird Watching

Hurricane, WV
Join us at Meeks Mountain Trails for another outdoor education event as Wings & Wander returns for a special fall birdwatching experience! This beginner-friendly birding event will be led by Michelle Platt and Laura Boggess of the Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club in Charleston. Fall is a great time to explore the trails and learn more about the birds that live in our area as well as those moving through during their seasonal migration. We’ll meet at 5:30 PM at the Big Red Barn at Hurricane City Park. Michelle and Laura will begin with a short, informal introduction to birding, including tips for getting started, identifying common birds, understanding fall migration, and using helpful tools and resources for new birders. After a brief Q&A, we’ll head out on the trails for a guided bird walk and put what we’ve learned into practice. Whether you’re brand new to birding, interested in learning more, or simply looking for a reason to spend a fall evening outdoors, this is a great opportunity to learn, explore, and connect with nature. Bring your binoculars if you have them. We’ll also have a limited number available to share. This is a free event, but donations to support Meeks Mountain Trails and our outdoor education programs are always welcome. Bring a friend or family member and come Wings & Wander with us this fall!

UPHA Trainers Horsemanship Challenge

Ocala, FL
Join us for the UPHA Trainer's Horsemanship Challenge class, the final event of the Thursday evening session at the Ocala International Horse Show. HOW IT WORKS: Trainers will compete aboard Academy-type horses that they have provided or borrowed. Trainers will ride first direction at the walk, trot, and canter, along with any additional commands selected by the judge. The line-up will then be called for. For the second direction, trainers will be asked to swap horses with another trainer (the methodology of how swapping will work is being kept a surprise!). The trainers will then ride the second direction of the ring at a walk, trot, and canter to complete the class. The judges will then tie the class. COST & ENTRY: Entries are limited to the first 25 riders signed up through the online portal. The entry fee is $200 per trainer. $100 of this entry fee will benefit the UPHA Young Professionals, and the other $100 will benefit the Ocala International Horse Show. Trainers must sign up on the online donation website and pay the fee to the horse show office. Hannah Sette and Emma Caruso will assist in finding horses for trainers who would like to participate but do not have a horse available. SO, WHAT'S THE CATCH? Prior to the Trainer's Horsemanship Challenge, UPHA Young Professionals will auction off five "Command Spots" via a silent auction on a table by the VIP Dinner Ticket Table. The five highest bidders will submit one horsemanship command for the judges to incorporate during the Challenge class. Judges will ensure that the requests are appropriate, safe, and suitable for the horses and riders and will have full discretion about when the commands will be given during the class. Examples of submitted commands could include: • Canter with one hand. • Perform a lead change down the center of the arena before changing direction. • Change posting diagonals every three strides. • Halt and immediately pick up the opposite lead. WHAT TO WEAR/TACK: All participating trainers will wear an official UPHA Trainer's Horsemanship Challenge t-shirt paired with traditional jodhpurs. Horses must be ridden Saddle Seat. The use of spurs and whips are optional. Additional t-shirts will be offered for sale for $25 to any spectators! PRIZES: $5,000 will be awarded in cash prizes to all ribbon winners in the Challenge class (1st - $2,000, 2nd - $1,000, 3rd - $500, 4th - $500, 5th - $250, 6th - $250, 7th - $200, 8th - $150, 9th - $100, 10th - $50), along with ribbons and baseball caps. The trainer who raises the most money will receive a package from Freedman Tous les Jours Performance Jods, work boots, and a sweatshirt (ladies) or polo shirt (men). For any questions or information on how to sign up, contact Emma Caruso at 781-361-3663 or emmamcaruso@gmail.com. Thank you to our prize sponsors for helping us make this happen! The Embodied Practice - 10/29 Drop-In

Woodbury, MN
GENTLE | Softening Into Support | 5–6:15 p.m. Thursdays Fewer postures, slower transitions, and no repeated chaturanga/cardio sequence create more spaciousness to sense, explore mobility, build strength, and notice the subtleties of our experience. Gentle doesn't mean no challenge. We'll still play (emphasis on play!) with engagement, balance, and progression—because nervous-system flexibility isn't about avoiding activation. Instead, we’ll explore what can soften when we know we are supported—and how much effort is actually enough for this moment. FLOW | Responsive Strength | 6:30–7:45 p.m. Thursdays Flow brings more movement, transitions, cardiovascular engagement, and progressive builds—with opportunities to explore strength, balance, more complex expressions of poses, and the option of a peak pose (or two!). But the invitation is never simply to achieve the "advanced" pose. This series, we’ll explore strength without unnecessary rigidity: Can I meet challenge, respond to what my body is telling me, and use enough effort without automatically reaching for more? Both practices will continue to include optional hands-on assists, as well as our end-of-practice ritual many of you already know: savasana with optional hands-on occipital release (with or without essential oils) and end-of-the-series hot towel ritual (now more often with our slightly shorter series!). Because letting go isn't the absence of effort. Sometimes it is discovering that we don't need more effort than this moment requires. And receiving support is part of the practice, too.

The Embodied Practice - Fall Session II

Woodbury, MN
Two ways to explore the same practice: Both Gentle and Flow will share the same theme, breath practice, and physiological focus—but will explore them with different pacing and levels of activation. Because letting go isn't the absence of effort. Sometimes it is discovering that we don't need more effort than this moment requires. And receiving support is part of the practice, too. And then... we come Full Circle. After five weeks of practice, our Gentle and Flow communities will have the opportunity to come together for FULL CIRCLE—a special closing experience designed not to ask us to release one more thing, but to notice what becomes available when we make a little more room. We’ll move from doing into receiving with an extended sound healing, followed by the option to stay after for reflection and optional sharing, simple snacks and drinks, conversation (think questions we haven't previously had time to explore), and time to simply... be together. A collective exhale—and an opportunity to receive what is already here.
