The winter solstice gets a short shrift among the calendar of holidays: quiet and starry, it is too often skipped over in the hectic rush up to Christmas and New Year's. But it is a day and a night unlike any of the rest in the year: when night is at its longest, the importance of the comforts of home and warmth and friendship is at its biggest, too. With those comforts within reach, the long night itself becomes velvet-inviting, rather than cold and foreboding, no matter what the weather. Event Details Please join WVMTR and HRDO in celebrating the 2026 Winter Solstice with an all-night run in Helvetia, WV. The run and clock will start at sunset on Saturday, 19 December, 5:02pm, and stop at sunrise on Sunday, 20 December, 7:35am. We will run together and alone to complete as many laps of the Helvetia Historic Trail as we can in that time. If you've never run through a night before, this is a great place to figure it out. This will be a fun run and not a race---but there will be some small recognition of whoever chooses to run the most complete laps and whoever runs the fastest single lap during the night, and we'll keep track of how many laps we complete as a group. You do not need to be a member of WVMTR to join us for this run! All runners must be 18 years of age or older on the day of the run, but family is welcome at the aid station. Please check out the frequently asked questions for more nitty gritty details, or send us an email if you have questions that aren't answered! Potluck Aid Station Runners and their crew will have access to the Star Band Hall throughout the night to use as an aid station and gathering place. You will also have access to the Helvetia Public Library for a place to rest that is apart from the action of the hall and aid station through the night. We will provide some basic hydration and typical ultra aid station fare, but please consider this event as a potluck and bring both useful and less-useful-but-fun things to share with your fellow runners. If you've got a favorite camp bowl / mug and spoon / spork / fork situation, bring that along, too, so we can cut down on trash. Event Size Helvetia is a small town without much lodging or many facilities, and the Star Band Hall is a small hall, so this event is limited to a small number of runners. That is a hard cap that will not be increased, so do not drag your feet about signing up for too long. There will be a wait list and, while there are no guarantees about these things, in the past every runner who has put their name on the wait list at least got a chance to sign up before the run. Trail Info and Maps The Helvetia Historic trail is a 2.9 (ish) mile loop starting and ending at the Star Band Hall in town. It heads up the first paved then gravel Old Helvetia Road to a hairpin left on to double track farm road. Part of the way up that double track hill, you take a gentle left for the last mile or so back to town on unimproved county road, with just a little bit of pavement again at the very end. In not-quite-three miles, you gain and then lose some 550 ft of elevation. It is marked with red circular metal blazes (shown on the second link below), and will also be blazed with reflective tags for the event. We will travel the trail in a counter-clockwise direction, which is what is described above. We'll make sure that you know where to go on the first few laps so that you'll be set for the night. Welcome to the 17th running of the Frozen Sasquatch trail race. The race consist of two distances, 25k and 50k, both starting at 8:00am. The Marshall Recreation Center’s Annual Triathlon is the Tri-States only indoor triathlon event. The event features swimming, biking, and running...INDOORS! The fourth annual Charley Clayton Memorial Peep Festival will be held April 11 at Fairmont State University. It is our mission to honor the life and legacy of Charley through an annual celebration highlighting individuality, self-expression, and inclusion through a colorful and sweet springtime celebration. On April 10, we will host the Fairmont Memorial Walk.  The one-mile walk will kick off the 2026 Charley Clayton Memorial Peep Festival and was created to provide a meaningful community event to honor and remember loved ones and celebrate their lives.  The registration fee includes a t-shirt (deadline March 21) and benefits our annual scholarship for a Marion County senior. 8th Annual Canaan Valley Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K  Join us for the 8th Annual Canaan Valley Half Marathon, 10k & 5k, April 25 - 26, 2026! Hosted at Canaan Valley Resort, in Tucker County, West Virginia, in the heart of the Potomac Highlands. This road race takes place in one of the East Coast’s most idyllic settings and is just a short drive to any outdoor activity you could want. The area is also home to two amazing and eclectic mountain towns full of arts and culture. So if you are looking for a new Half Marathon, 10K, or 5K to run and need a mountain vacation or just a getaway for the day or weekend, we are the race for you! The New River Gorge Rim to Rim Race is a running road race from one rim of the New River Gorge, down to the bottom where you'll cross over the New River, then back to the rim of the other side with a short trail section to finish. This bucket list event will provide runners with breathtaking views throughout the course in the adventure sports capital of West Virginia - Fayetteville. This event is hosted by Active Southern West Virginia at Adventures on the Gorge, where racers will finish at the resorts rim side pool to enjoy a catered brunch overlooking the New River Gorge. The distance is 6 miles. Brunch is included in the registration.  The race course will begin on the south side of Fayette Station Road and finish at Adventures on the Gorge. The 48th annual Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic Run and Walk will be on Saturday, May 23. This challenging course is well known for its changes in elevation. The Half Marathon Run and Walk will have prize categories (for male and female) for the Open division. Race towels, bottled water and fresh fruit will be available for participants. Participants will receive one food voucher. Pre-registered participants are guaranteed a shirt. The Ohio Valley Trail Partners presents the 19th annual tour of the Wheeling Heritage Trail on Sunday, May 24th. This race is a fundraiser for Huntington High Cross-Country and also to serve a purpose bigger than ourselves a portion of our proceeds will go toward the Facing Hunger Foodbank. The course starts at Harris RiverFront Park and then runs downtown and loops through Marshall’s campus and then returns to the park. Packet Pickup and Race-Day Registration Packet pickup and race-day registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 31. A check-in table will be located near the 12th Street entrance to Harris Riverfront Park. Race Start Both the 5K and 5 Miler will begin at 8:00 a.m. The starting line will be located at the far end of the parking lot near the 12th Street entrance. Course Information The 5K and 5-mile courses begin and end in the same locations. Both races will exit and reenter Harris Riverfront Park through the 10th Street entrance. The primary difference between the courses is: 5K participants will turn left onto Hal Greer Boulevard. 5 Miler participants will continue along 5th Avenue to approximately 19th Street before turning back. A water station will be available approximately 1.5 miles into the 5K and shortly before the 3-mile mark of the 5 Miler. HALF MARATHON:The Parkersburg News and Sentinel Half Marathon begins at 8:00 a.m. (Wheelchair division 7:50 a.m.) in downtown Parkersburg and is the RRCA WV State Championship. The rolling course will take you out of the city and into the scenic surroundings of West Virginia before looping back into the commercial area. Join us for the 6th Annual Moonlight on the Falls Marathon on August 29-30, 2026, at beautiful Blackwater Falls State Park in Tucker County, West Virginia. Beat the summer heat run with us under the stars and enjoy the perfect running temperatures of our cool late summer mountain nights.     This race will be a nighttime race featuring a Marathon, Half Marathon, Distance Challenge (Ultra Marathon), Relay, and Quarter Marathon. It will be an approximately 6.55-mile (Quarter Marathon) looped course beginning and ending at Pendleton Point in Blackwater Falls State Park. The Distance Challenge will begin at 10 PM and go until 7:45 AM with options to run Solo, 2 Person Relay, 4 Person Relay, and 6 Person Relay. 51st Anniversary Event for Junior Mentoring Program! Kids will have the chance to run a .25 mile circle as many times as they like, in a 20 minute window! Along the course you'll find SIX color stations: blue, orange, green, pink, purple & yellow. Try to get as colorful as you can! Along the course they'll come across one of the many obstacles they will get the chance to attempt! Examples are: mini balance beam, a "tire flip", and a spider web, and many more! They'll finish under the inflatable finish line amongst a cloud of bubbles. There will be race pictures offered at the event! Come join us on September 26th at 2:00 P.M.!
