Kick off your Thanksgiving Day with a 5K Turkey Trot in Rhinelander. The run/walk starts and ends at the front doors of Rhinelander High School. The high school commons will be used as a warming area and for bathroom. This event will be hand timed. Registration prior to Race Day is only $30, with $40 same-day registration. Kids ages 12 & under are $15. Packet pick-up and same-day registration will likewise occur inside the High School Commons. Winners of each age group will receive a Thanksgiving pie as their award. Age groups will be in 10-year increments (12 and Under, 13-19, 20-29, etc.). Join us for some River Dazzle pre-parade fun on Main Street! The second annual Santa fun run will start and finish at Veterans Park. We're doing both a 5k distance and a One Hour run off-season mojo on a super fast track (Hint: no wind/no hills) We are going to run as far as you can in one hour! Sure, you may wish to compete against the runner for you (and how much fun is that!) but you are also going to push yourself farther and faster than you ever have just because you know the clock is clicking...down!!!! But wait -there is even a third option?!?!? We have a "virtual" outside running option. MECCA Trails is pleased to announce the 2026 Winterfest, to be held live on January 16, 2027 and virtually between December 19, 2026, and February 14, 2027. Winterfest includes multiple skiing events that will be offered as a timed event on January 16th or virtual, self-timed throughout the winter. The snowshoe tour will be a virtual experience, and racers can choose to submit their snowshoe time to be eligible for prizes. All MECCA Trails will be open throughout the skiing season. All students ages 19 and under can register for any event for just $20, thanks to generous support from our sponsors. Please note: Your age bracket (including for determining student pricing) will be based on your age as of January 16, 2027. RunSignUp will automatically charge you the correct registration fee based on your age during checkout. January 16, 2027, skiing events include: MECCA 30K: The MECCA 30K is designed to challenge serious skiers. The race is a two lap race course, starting and finishing at the MECCA Chalet. Choose to register for the classic or skate division. The course is rated moderate to advanced with numerous hills. This race is designed for skiers who intend to finish the event in 4 hours 30 minutes or less. (Actual course length is 30.6 kilometers.) Flowage 15K: This race showcases most of the MECCA Trail system. There's even a beaver dam to walk across. The Mercer Springs Trail meets the Klondike trail, so participants can choose 1,2 or 3 miles of beautiful trails. Registered snowshoers can choose to self-report their time for the 2.1 mile Mercer Springs Trail to be eligible for prizes. Registration all virtual events is $30. The MECCA TRAILS Winterfest is presented by MECCA Trails and the Gogebic Range Health Foundation. It is a fundraising event for MECCA Trails, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Profits are used to promote, expand, and enhance the MECCA Trail system as well as provide funding for the MECCA Experience community outreach program. The Gogebic Range Health Foundation partners with MECCA Trails to assist with meeting their community support goals.

Since 2013, runners from across the Midwest have gathered to celebrate the end of the year with a one-of-a-kind event: an indoor, last-person-standing progression run! Hosted on the Pettit National Ice Center's 443m track, runners speed up every 3 laps (0.84 miles), until they can't go any faster. With two options for when to start progressing (~6:30 or ~6:10), runners keep running as long as they can hang with the ever increasing pace. When it's down to the final pack, The Bell will be rung and a 3 lap first-to-the-finish race to determine the top places is on. About This Event Join us for the best party race of the season! This 5K event, held at the luxurious four-diamond Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, is the perfect weekend getaway for you and your running pals! The Party this year will be held in the Grand Ball Room which is located just north of the main entrance to the resort. The party this year will include the world famous Schnapps Stop (at the end of the run), food, lots of beer and soda, DJ, dancing, dance contests and more. We absolutely encourage you to dress up and be ready to party but a costume is not required (let’s keep it classy... or, you know, maybe not!). The party will close down at about 9:00pm. Race History It all started on a balmy winter day in 1980 at the Playboy Club in beautiful Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Over 1,000 runners showed up for our first-time event. The late John Jantz fired the starter’s pistol, and Playboy bunnies, in uniform, gave out the trophies! Since then the run has added many additional run and party features. Join us for the annual running of the best darn race and party in the Midwest! Bib pickup Bib numbers may be picked up on race day starting at 12:30 PM at the Grand Ball Room. Awards Awarded to the first place finishers for each age. Medals are awarded to the fastest male and female of EACH age (e.g., 16,17,18,19,20,21,… and up)! Awards for the overall fastest male and female winners. And then there is the Grand, Overall, Overall, World Champion award! Race Swag! A special award will be given to all preregistered runners.

Snow Striders is an introductory ski program for kids in grades K4-3rd grades. The program is intended to be fun and get the kids used to being on skis for the enjoyment of our winter. You can use your own equipment or you can use equipment for our rental inventory at no cost. The cost of this program is FREE for club members. There is no non-member rate. If you need to get a family membership, go to our Membership page at https://www.wausaunordic.org/membership and obtain a family membership. To sign your child up for the Snow Striders program, simply click on the Snow Striders sign-up button on this page. If you have multiple children in the program, please sign up all of them as we need their information to make sure we have equipment for them. We are looking for additional help for this program and ask that parents volunteer to help at 2 more more sessions. Parents are also encouraged to help out on the trails and practice area and just need to wear skis or snowshoes. No experience is needed to help. A winter tradition returns as the Milwaukee County Zoo commemorates the annual Samson Stomp. Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to join in this popular event, honoring one of the Zoo’s most famous and beloved residents, Samson, the silverback gorilla (1950-1981). Money raised from the event supports all the animals in the Zoo’s population. Entry fees include a long-sleeved T-shirt, Zoo admission, beverage, snack, and parking. After the event, participants are invited to enjoy the remainder of the day at the Zoo. Flex your athletic and artistic skills during this unique family friendly event at the Nine Mile Forest Recreation Area organized in collaboration with the Wausau Nordic Ski Club, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, and visiting artist Marina Mangubi. Join us for what is truly a unique event that has never been tried anywhere in the world (at least as far as we know)! A painting biathlon! You read that right. You ski for 2k, paint a picture, then ski for final 2k. Winning performance will be based on race time and quality of artwork. The registration is free, but spaces are limited. Event Structure: Participants will ski a 2k sprint to an outdoor painting stadium, where each spot will have an easel set up. While on skis, participants will make quick (15 min) paintings, followed by another 2k loop. The paintings will be judged by a live audience. The winners of each heat will be determined based on their race times and audience scores. All painting supplies, including a backpack kit with a custom 3D-printed palette will be provided free of charge. Ski rentals will be available for participants needing the gear, also free of charge. All levels of skiing and art experience are welcome. Divisions: There will be two broad age groups divided into three heats; ages 16 and over - skate, ages 16 and over - classic, and ages 15 and under - combined skate and classic. The Himanaji (Hi-ma-NA-ji) Winter Challenge is a 5k snowshoe race hosted by Tara Lila at the Ripco Road Park Unit in Oneida County, Wisconsin. The name of the race comes from two Sanskrit words: “Himana (adj.)” meaning “snowy”, and “Aji (n.)” meaning “racecourse”. Citizen Racers The 15k races will each consist of one loop, which goes out past the Sugarbush Cabin, up to the Summit, with views of Lake Superior, and down The Buzz. The 30k races will ski that loop twice. There will be two on-course aid stations with water, so 15k skiers will pass 2 aid stations, and the 30 skiers will pass 5 aid stations (2 on course each lap, one at the start/finish area). Race Options: 15lk Classic 15k Skate 30k Skate 30k Classic 30k Skiathlon (classic and skate) Citizen Registration Fee: Race registration will be $50 for all citizen races through January 14th. $60 from January 15th to January 27th, and $70 January 28th to February 5th. Skiers may register on race day (all registrations are online through runsignup) but are limited if races reach their registration cap. All registered citizen racers will receive race swag and a piece of locally made pie. Overall race winners will receive a whole pie. There are also age group awards for each race. Youth Racers: Youth skiers who are on a ski team should sign up for the race with their team.
