In 2020, ASICS elite athlete Johnny Gregorek laced up in his favorite pair of blue jeans and set the World Record for the fastest mile ever run in denim—all in an effort to raise awareness for mental health. The Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial 5K Walk/Run will take place following a ceremony honoring the 29 Rhode Islander’s killed post 9/11 in the Global War on Terror.   The course will run through picturesque Fort Adams State Park and begin and end on the parade field inside the historic Fort.  Proceeds from the 5k will support the Memorial and Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, the State’s primary non-profit serving homeless and at-risk veterans.   Registered participants are asked to arrive beginning at 7:30am. 1st annual Rhode Island Yacht Club Cardboard Boat Regatta will be open to the public and held at the RIYC facilities on Ocean Avenue, Edgewood, RI in 2026 Date to be Announced.  Join us as we celebrate a day of creativity, competition, and free family fun. We will kick off a series of heats testing the engineering, ingenuity, determination, and artistry of our participants.  Launching from Stillhouse Cove, each hand made cardboard boat must hold at least two crew members, who will hopefully paddle their ship out and around a buoy and back to the beach. Boats will compete in a series of heats in competitive categories.  We expect to see the spirited competitors from Local Universities, Private and Public High Schools, Civic Organizations, and the local Restaurant and Hospitality merchants.  This will obviously be a spectacle long remembered and not to be missed. Cabo Verdean 5K Mission Statement The Cabo Verdean 5K was founded to support, uplift, and provide resources to individuals with breast cancer, their caregivers, families, and communities across Cabo Verde Islands. Our goal is to provide medical assistance, donations, equipment and increase awareness, reduce stigma associated with breast cancer; through education, promoting healthy living, early detection, and annual screening. This is a 5K Run/Walk Event to raise money for Operation Stand Down in Rhode Island, which raises money for struggling and homeless veterans. We also will be raising funds for our core mission to help PTSD veterans and their families.  There is a $5 registration discount for military and first responders. Racers are electronic BiBTag Timed using MyLaps (reg). All participants will receive memorial military-style dog tags. Children 12 and under are free. Wheelchairs are welcome. This 5K Run/Walk event is in honor of PFC Zachary M. Martin, USMC, who took his own life due to PTSD.

Athletes will experience true coastal conditions in a clearly marked course with excellent sightlines and shoreline support.
