Misty’s Legacy 100 Mile ChallengeCelebrating 100 Years of the Chincoteague Pony Swim & the Saving of Beebe Ranch Step into history and ride for a cause with the Misty’s Legacy 100 Mile Challenge — a virtual riding challenge event inspired by the timeless story of Misty of Chincoteague, written 78 years ago by Marguerite Henry. The book may have introduced Misty to the world, but the real story began long before.  The swim not only helps control the population of the ponies on the island and prevent starvation, it also historically has helped to be a fund raiser for the fire department.  In 1925, the Chincoteague Island Pony Swim became a formal community event, complete with a carnival, bringing families and horse lovers together from across the nation.
