The Tunnel to Towers Run & Walk Series was created to honor the heroic life and death of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping on his gear and running 3 miles through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. “The 8-mile swim to Alligator Lighthouse is a challenge. It’s not for the faint of heart"  How it started When World Renowned Artist, Lighthouse Larry decided to swim, in his native town of Islamorada, to Alligator Lighthouse and back, alone and self-supported, his friends thought he was crazy. When he then said out loud “every open water swimmer should experience this,” Larry became the anchor to the Swim for Alligator Lighthouse. The Fighting Manatee Swim Club, the Masters swim club of Islamorada, accepted the challenge to present a world class open water swim event in the Florida Keys to help raise awareness and funds to Save Alligator Lighthouse. The Fighting Manatees presented the Inaugural Swim for Alligator Lighthouse in 2013. It’s here to stay! Race Overview  The Swim for Alligator Lighthouse is an 8-mile open water swim. The 9/11 Heroes Run 5K welcomes runners, ruckers, and walkers of all ages and fitness levels to honor the heroes of 9/11 and those who've served our nations since. We activate & unite communities and empower local veterans, active duty, first responders, and families of the fallen. TMF is proud to partner with GORUCK again with rucking divisions at every run. Rucking is a sport based on special forces training in which participants walk or run while carrying weighted rucksacks. Our "zero waste" 5k race will take place on Sept 20th 2026 at 7:30 am in scenic downtown Venice. The course will feature  2 loops on the city's famous canopy tree-lined road.  The race will start across from daiquiri deck on Venice ave and head west towards the beach. The finish will be at Daquiri deck and Centennial Park and include a post-race party with a beer garden, iced tea and coffee bar, vegan and non vegan breakfast burritos and pastries, live music and awards. Our main goal is to raise environmental awareness in the running community (and non-running community) and promote environmental responsibility with event hosting.  For our race there will be no single-use plastic water bottles, no plastic goodie bags or other items that just end up in the landfill! The community has rallied around cancer initiatives for over 22 years, raising awareness and support for cancer care.
