2026 Alpha Phi Thankful 5k Race

Charlottesville, VA
The Thankful 5k is a race dedicated to bringing together the Zeta Iota chapter of Alpha Phi, family members, and the greater UVA and Charlottesville community in honor of Shelley Goldsmith and Casey Schulman, two inspiring members of Alpha Phi at UVA. All funds raised for the 5k are donated to foundations and scholarships in their names aimed at providing support for students seeking or enrolled in higher education. The Shelley Goldsmith Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Jefferson Scholars Foundation candidate from Southwest Virginia who made it to the final selection round. The Casey Schulman Foundation was started as a non-profit with the mission of awarding a college scholarship to Justice High School students who would carry on Casey's spirit. This year's race will not only include the return of the in-person 5k on grounds, but will continue last year's weekend-long virtual component, allowing supporting members to participate nation wide. The Thankful 5k derived its name from Casey's hand painted "thankful" sign that she kept above her bed. Thankful was the way Casey lived her life. After Casey passed away in 2012, her sisters in Alpha Phi took the initiative to create a new philanthropic event, the Thankful 5K. For 10 years, this race has continued to spread Casey's uncanny ability to inspire kindness and gratitude.

Massanutten Monster 5K

Mc Gaheysville, VA
The Massanutten Monster is not your average 5K. Starting at the base of Massanutten Resort, this beast sends you climbing, grinding, and questioning your life choices all the way toward the top gaining over 1000 feet of elevation before turning you loose to bomb your way back down to the finish. It’s short. It’s steep. And it’s going to hurt. Think you can tame the Monster? The fastest male and female racers will each take home $200 cash—and in future races, an additional bounty will be added for anyone brave enough to steal the course record. One mountain. One Monster. 5K. Up and down. Come see what you’ve got. This is the course route marked in blue: https://caltopo.com/p/7J7C7

Turkey Trot Trail 10K & 5K

Chesterfield, VA
As autumn draws toward its quiet end and the forests stand in their bronze and fading gold, the First Responder Turkey Trot Trail 10K is swiftly approaching. It is set forth for those who bear the weight of duty to serve their community - firefighters and law enforcement officers - to gather together to test their physical and mental fortitude. The trail winds through old woods and over steady rises, shaped by years and weather. The 5K offers a swift, purposeful course for those seeking a sharp test of strength. The 10K carries runners deeper into the terrain, demanding endurance, discipline, and resolve. Here, in the clear air of late fall, first responders take to the path to measure themselves, strengthen their bodies, and stand alongside others who know the demands of service. Each mile is a quiet testament to your resilience.

Gobbler 5K, 10K, & 13.1M at Colonial Heights, VA (47)

Colonial Heights, VA
US Road Running Races US Road Running races are built for runners and walkers who like friendly, low-pressure race days with just enough competition to keep things exciting. Our events are local, welcoming, and easy to jump into, whether you are chasing a PR, collecting another themed medal, working toward series points, or just getting outside with good people. Most races are small enough to feel personal but organized enough to feel official. You can expect a clear course, helpful race staff, finisher medals, results, and a relaxed community feel. Bring your fast shoes, your steady walking pace, your favorite running buddy, or your best “I signed up for this on purpose” smile. We will be glad to see you at the start line. A quick race-day note: because many US Road Running events are small local races, we normally have one or two staff members at each race. EMS is not stationed on site, and water stations are limited to the finish area at the end of each lap and at the race finish. Please plan for the weather, bring anything you may want between laps, and check in with race staff if you need help. View Race Course, Results, and Race Information on the US Road Running race page.

Founded in 2014, and based in Bristow, VA, is a 501 (c) (3), non-profit organization. SJGF was founded by Sara Knight in honor of Sara and Jason Knight’s daughter Julia, who passed away in 2013 due to complications of a rare disease called I-cell. Julia lived 12 beautiful years inspiring everyone who knew her, read about her, and loved her. Despite the storms she faced, Julia learned how to “Dance In The Rain.” She lived in the moment, made life SWEET, and filled hearts with JOY…just by being her. Their mission is to Bless, Celebrate, and Love children who are medically fragile, have complex special/medical needs, or are currently facing a medical crisis. They grant wishes that bring joy and change lives, fill in gaps other services are unable to fill, and provide support with day-to-day needs for families going through the unimaginable with their child. The gifts they provide bring comfort and happiness; and oftentimes dramatically improve and change children’s lives. So this year we will run for all the raindancers, as they call the children they serve.
