The 14th Annual Theresa Borgia 5K Run/Walk & Children's Fun Run will be held Sunday, May 24, 2025, 9:30am at the Lackawanna Heritage Trail on Olive Street. Theresa Borgia was a long-time member of the JCC of Scranton. She was a tireless advocate for breast cancer awareness and a well-known volunteer for the annual Komen Race for the Cure. Her initial diagnosis was in 1997, and after years in remission she was back in treatment in 2006. In November of 2010, Theresa lost her thirteen-year fight with breast cancer. In memory of Paul "Hook" O'Malley who believed in the Spiritual, Emotional, and Physical Health of the youth in his community.  The "1 Mile Firecracker Race" at 707 North South Road, August 16, 2026 is in memory of Paul "Hook" O'Malley, a local boxing trainer who succumbed to cancer on September 25, 1992. "Hook" was a tough man with a generous nature and common bond with people from all walks of life. He was at ease in a press conference or guiding a troubled adolescent. He had a moral philosophy of what was right. He would say "Straighten up and fly right!" We who believe in his philosophy and the hereafter know that he is soaring high above us with a watchful eye on all that he loves. This race will be a testament of the great love and devotion his family and friends have for his memory and worthy cause. Hook's loss is endured knowing he lives on in our hearts and souls. All proceeds will benefit the Lackawanna county unit of the Am

Run (or Walk) for Chase – 5K to Benefit the Chase Yarns Memorial Scholarship. In June 2024, we experienced the unimaginable loss of our son and brother, Chase Yarns, at just 26 years old. Chase brought endless love, laughter, and kindness to everyone he met. His spirit lives on through the Chase Yarns Memorial Scholarship Fund. Who We Are: Healthy Kids Running Series is a five (5) week running program in the spring and fall for kids Pre-K through 8th grade. Each HKRS Series takes place once a week and offers age-appropriate running events including the 50 & 75 yard dashes, the 1/4 mile, the 1/2 mile and the 1 mile run. Kids will earn points for each race they complete based on their finish. Pricing: The registration fee covers the entire five (5) weeks of the Series which includes race bibs for each week, a runner shirt, a finisher medal and any sponsor giveaways. Steamtown Marathon 2026 10/11/2026 Forest City High School, Forest City, PA to Courthouse Square, Downtown Scranton, PA Start: 100 Susquehanna Street, Forest City, PA. Finish: 209 North Washington Ave., Scranton, PA 18503 This is a USATF certified marathon that is an official qualifying race for The Boston Marathon. The race features a 955’ drop in elevation from start to finish and includes several miles on mostly paved Rails to Trails along the Lackawanna River.

The 15th annual John Brewster Memorial 5k/1k is a race that takes place in Scranton, AR.  100% of the race proceeds go to support the Helping Our Kids Foundation and help provide scholarships to graduating seniors.  After the race, be sure to visit the city park for vendors, games, music, and BBQ cookoff.

Kathleen “Katie” Marie Shoener, 29, fought bipolar disorder since 2005, but she finally lost the battle on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016 to suicide in Lewis Center, Ohio. Katie was born in Scranton and is the daughter of Deacon Edward R. and Ruth Shoener of Scranton. She was a graduate of Scranton High School, received her Bachelor of Science in business from Penn State University and recently her MBA from Ohio State University. So often people who have a mental illness are known as their illness. People say that “she is bipolar” or “he is schizophrenic.” People who have cancer are not cancer, those with diabetes are not diabetes. Katie was not bipolar – she had an illness called bipolar disorder – Katie herself was a beautiful child of God. The way we talk about people and their illnesses affects the people themselves and how we treat the illness. In the case of mental illness there is so much fear, ignorance and hurtful attitudes that the people who suffer from mental illness needlessly suffer further. Our society does not provide the resources that are needed to adequately understand and treat mental illness. In Katie’s case, she had the best medical care available, she always took the cocktail of medicines that she was prescribed and she did her best to be healthy and manage this illness – and yet – that was not enough. Someday a cure will be found, but until then, we need to support and be compassionate to those with mental illness, every bit as much as we support those who suffer from cancer, heart disease or any other illness. Please know that Katie was a sweet, wonderful person that loved life, the people around her – and Jesus Christ. Date: October 31, 2026 Venue: Nay Aug Park in Scranton, PA. Join the Respiratory Therapy Club at Marywood University for our Walk/Run for your Lungs 5k as we run to raise awareness about the vital role respiratory therapists play in helping people breathe easier and to promote the importance of lung health. Every step brings us closer to a healthier, and more informed community. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the American Lung Association, while the remaining funds will benefit the Respiratory Therapy Club and will help us continue educating our community, promoting respiratory care, and supporting the next generation of respiratory care professionals.

What: 2 Mile Walk, 5K Run, 10K Run to benefit the St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in downtown Scranton. When: Saturday, November 7, 2026. All races start at 9 AM Where: Lackawanna River Heritage Trail, Olive St. trailhead. Geisinger College of Health Sciences is hosting its 17th annual Turkey Trot 5K/10K race! On November 15th, please enjoy the race day with us and benefit Family to Family, a movement to provide Thanksgiving dinners to hundreds of members of our Scranton community organized by Friends of the Poor and the Catherine McAuley Center, supported by a fund of the Scranton Area Community Foundation. The first 120 pre-registered participants will receive a complementary t-shirt. After the first 120 registrants, t-shirts will be available for purchase on race day. The 13th edition of the Scranton Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, beginning and ending at PenFed Credit Union Field at Memorial Stadium. The goal of the race is to provide a superior event highlighting the local area and in doing so, bring increased exposure and revenue for local businesses.    Please note the start times for the half marathon run (8:00 AM) and the half marathon walk (6:45 AM).   ***BACK FOR 2026 - Run/Walk Category We're pleased to offer a new run/walk category for the half marathon. Please select this option when registering if you plan on doing a combination of both running and walking on the course. As a run/walker, you will start at 8 AM with the run and will be timed as a runner. The Office 5K is a road race in Scranton, PA that passes sites featured on NBC’s “The Office.” Participants can dress up as their favorite Office character for fun and prizes. Walkers can enjoy a modified 1 mile course with special activities along the way. The race begins at 1pm on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at 523 Linden Street in Scranton, in front of Backyard Ale House. Participants can pick up their race bibs, tee shirts, and race info at Cooper’s Seafood House (701 N. Washington Avenue) on May 1 from 5-7pm. (These items are also available day of the race.)
