Join us for the second annual SSG Tanner Grone Memorial 5K, a special race dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of SSG Tanner Grone, a beloved local community member who enjoyed bringing people together and having fun. This event, organized by Tanner's sister and one of his best friends, will celebrate his love for community, family, and friendships, while raising funds to support a Gorham High School Senior who shares values close to his heart. Tanner enlisted in the Army on July 11, 2017, and to honor his service and his spirit, the race will take place each year in July. The month that marked the beginning of his military journey, and the beginning of finding himself.  The 5K course will start at Tanner’s soccer field, a place where he excelled and made lifelong memories. The race will wind its way through the town, passing Tanner’s childhood home and the schools he attended, offering participants a heartfelt journey through a few of the places that shaped his life. A physical and mental test, but the course is flat and non technical. This will challenge first timers who have never completed a 50k race, while also challenging those more advanced who want to hit their 50k PR. This race will also include a 6 loop 25k option and 2 loop 10k option.

This year commemorates the 25th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001, Attacks on America. The annual 9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run started in 2011 by the family of Steve Ward, from Gorham, Maine. In 2001, Steve was young, vibrant, and ambitious, climbing a promising career ladder at Cantor Fitzgerald, having just started his dream job in the World Trade Center, NYC. He was a funny, charismatic, and loving son, brother, uncle, and friend when he was so needlessly taken from us on September 11th. He was one of the best and the brightest, a symbol of what America lost that tragic day. This event is to honor and remember Steve, and all of those we lost that day. All registration fees and proceeds go directly to the Stephen G. Ward Memorial Scholarship Fund, awarded annually to local high school graduates pursuing secondary education. This event has allowed the scholarship award to grow from its initial $200 annual award to the current $3,500 annual award! We sincerely hope you are able to join us to honor and remember all that was lost. KIDS FUN RUN - 8:30 AM Held at the adjacent Gorham High School track *Ages 8 & under: 1 lap (0.25 mile) *Ages 9 & older: 2 laps (.50 mile) Prizes and refreshments for ALL participants! 5K RUN/WALK-Approximately 9:15 AM The 5K begins with the Uniformed First Responder sendoff after participants return from the Kids Fun Run. The runner/walker sendoff will follow race director remarks and the National Anthem. POST-RACE Refreshments provided. AWARDS: Overall Male &Female 1st and 2nd place male and female in each age group 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+ CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY: This event will be held rain or shine. If the race must be canceled due to severe weather, unsafe conditions, or circumstances beyond the organizer's control, registration fees are non-refundable. This is a family-friendly 5K run/walk. Proceeds support local food pantries. Awards for overall male/female winners and age categories. Bib raffles. Breakfast sandwiches, fruit and water.

At the time of his death he was working as a CPA for Canter Fitzgerald. The proceeds of this race benefit a college scholarship named after Stephen which provides money to a post-secondary education of a Gorham High School student.
